I believe this is currently the best score embedding solution available, apart from perhaps third party solutions such as MuseScore, which would require you to upload the music to their server.
It can play back the music, highlighting the notes, right on the webpage.

Great plugin to show your music sheets. No ads, really free. You need to access the author site to see the complete documentation, but overall it’s easy to use.

I used to struggle with Verovio’s JavaScript API and all different options, and I must say this plugin simplifies all!!
It is so useful to non programmers wishing to publish easily music sheet fragments.
To be warmly recommended!!!
